Fundraising

On this page we feature activities being undertaken by people/Companies who are raising money for us. We will also maintain a list of companies who have supported us during the year. Of course, there are many more individuals who make personal donations, and if possible, we will feature some of these as well. Click here for the list of Corporate Donors.

There are people regularly doing walks or runs for us. Chris Clements, whose son Aidan was born last May took up the challenge and ran the Great Edinburgh Run in May along with his colleahue Ash Haldane. They got in touch after the event :

"We used the t-shirts and they were great. I am going to keep up my running and so will continue to wear it when I am out and about. Thank you for the keyrings. Mine is now on my work keys for all to see! We both enjoyed the run and achieved the times we hoped for. I made it in 57 minutes and Ash made it in just over 1 hour 10 minutes. We were both really pleased. We took photographs of ourselves and two other teachers and these were printed on the school bulletin and given to all the parents so a little more exposure for SSCB."

Featured items - 2009

Janet and Alex decided to take a walk this year 2009 and entered the Walk for Scotland. Their supporters sponsored them for £95 which they were delighted to send to SSCB. They say: “We will be doing the walk again next year so we will be able to raise a little more with forward planning”. We congratulate them on their energy and participation in this annual event and perhaps we will see them in the picture gallery of the Walk for Scotland website next year : www.walkforscotland.com.

Dave Peat, Depute Head teacher of Leith Academy, telephoned Simpsons Special Care Babies on Thursday 2 July with fantastic news – that SSCB has been gifted £1,000 from the Academy. In 2009 many of the pupils from Leith Academy undertook a sponsored walk supported by teaching staff. They raised a wonderful amount, recognising their efforts and achievements in this endeavour. The funds raised are used within the Academy in support of pupil educational activities and support. There is an amount that is gifted to charities chosen by the pupils. SSCB has been most fortunate in being nominated for an award from the fund and to have succeeded.

We
commend and congratulate all those involved in the Sponsored Walk of 2009 and offer many thanks to sponsors, supporters and walkers.

Pam Hull, retiring President of the Corstorphine Inner Wheel presents a cheque for £2,300 to Gill Mitchell, Secretary to SSCB. Pam, the committee and members adopted SSCB as the charity they wished to support, as Pam's grandson Morgan had been cared for in NNU 11 years ago. This wonderful gift of £2,300 came about because of a very successful Fashion Show with raffle organised by the ladies. As a result of the Show in addition to SSCB receiving this wonderful cheque to support the babies of the NNU, 2 members of the Inner Wheel who had been models for the Show have been asked to model at a future event.

There are always people fundraising for us, and we like to feature some of them on this page. One such item is a letter with a donation of £1,034.78 from Sarah Comrie-Relax, who works for Scottish Widows. Rather than paraphrase the letter, Sarah explains it all in her letter which she says we can display on the website. Click here to read it. Many thanks to Sarah and her colleagues for such a wonderfull donation, which will be made even better by a further donation Sarah has gained from the Lloyds TSB foundation of up to £500.

Cycle Across Russia
Cheryl Lessels has just completed a huge 350 mile cycle from St Petersburg to Moscow ! Her son was in NNU for 7 weeks in 2001, and Cheryl has undertaken this mammoth task to raise funds for us. She has now returned from her trip and so far has raised over £3,500 !

She also included this message and 2 photo's :

Hiya, made it! Through the wind, rain and freezing cold! The Russians, food and accommodation were horrendous but the group of cyclists I was with were fab so helped each other through things like cycling up the motorway the wrongway, in the "hard shoulder", and cycling along the motorway the right way, on the inside lane!! Absolutely crazy and very scary!!! However, thanks for all your support!

Great Scottish Walks
Alan Raeburn and colleagues were a group of 8 walkers from the Almond Housing Association. Five walked the six miles in about 1hr 40 minutes the other three walked the 12 miles two in a time of 2hr 58 minutes and the other in 3hrs 8 minutes. We are not sure exactly how much was raised but well done to them all.

Roddy and Rhannon, twins who were in NNU, raised £400 in total in the Great Scottish Wee Walk, shared equally between Edinburgh NNU and Cresswell Maternity SCBU.

Sheila from Forres who came down to Edinburgh and walked for us on 22 June 2008 - a long way for a long walk !

And Shannon from Loanhead who walked again in the Great Scottish Wee Walk and raised £134.

Update September 2008
Team Talbot also took part in the walks. They were made up of one of our committee members Alison, her husband, and their daughter Eleanor, who was in the unit for 6 weeks after being born 8 ½ weeks earlyy when born just before Christmas 2004. Team Talbot all took part in a Wee Walk while Mummy and Daddy also did the full 12 mile walk in Edinburgh. They have raised a magnificent £1,300. Well done to them all.

It is lovely to be supported by these wonderful people and their sponsors.

More snippits of fundraising from 2008 ...

Emma, an ex NNU baby, spent a day baking with her Mum. On the last day of school she took her goodies in to school and sold the lot! She raised £65.04, gifting it to Simpsons Special Care Babies.

SSCB was contacted by Morag Hepburn, a staff member of The Scotsman newspaper. Staff had participated in fundraising, mainly through the sale of books, and raised nearly £900 for 2 charities. SSCB is one and received £427.72 from the kindness of all who participated in the sale.

Scotland's Gardens Scheme are the organisers of the "Yellow Book". This book, published annually, lists over a hundred wonderful Scottish gardens (many of them private which would otherwise never be seen) which will open to the public on specified dates. There is a small admission charge and a percentage of the takings are passed on to charity. Pomathorn House, Penicuik recently opened its garden gate to visitors through the scheme and SSCB was chosen by the owners to receive such a gift. SCG thus benefits many, many charities annually and has been doing so since 1931

Here are a few items from fundraisers during 2007, taking part in various events (and some older ones !) :

The Jewel, Edinburgh

We have been selected by ASDA at The Jewel, Edinburgh, to be their Charity In The Community. They are raising fund through various methods - SSCB charity boxes placed at the end of each check out, daily table sales, and there was also a raffle (a giant "Happy Feet Penguin" ! Asda are continually mentioning SSCB over their tannoy system too !

They are placing a noticed board in their foyer with a totaliser, so that customers can see how much money they are raising. They have advised us that they would like to raise enough money for 4 incubators. We obviously thank them for thinking of us and any amount they raise will be gratefully accepted. Thanks obviously go to their customers as well who are giving so generously to our cause.

JogScotland aims to get us all outdoors and become more active. John Smith, Moira Nicol and Andrew Jeske are three JogScotland Leaders who work at the Royal Infirmary site, and they are challenging themselves to run all of the 2007 Co-op Challenges ! They will be asking their colleagues, neighbours, friends and family to support them in this effort through sponsorship in aid of SSCB. The Challenges are 5 kilometre runs around Scotland and include two on one evening ! The runs take place in : Dryburgh, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Elgin & Tarvis over a 3 week period during June and July. Good luck to them during their challenge.

We are well used ot having walkers and runners doing things for us, but not so oftern do we get cyclists. Allan Ryan from Wallyford is taking part in Etape Caledonia on 24 June 2007, starting and finishing in Pitlochry. It is not for the faint hearted as the course is 130km / 81miles ! Best wishes to Allan for this event. (www.etapecaledonia.co.uk)

We have received a donation of £500 from Scotia Gas Networks plc through a scheme to emphasise safety throughout their staff. Derek Dargo (a SSCB member) put forward our name as the recipients of the £500 that came as the prize for the successful team/man.

We recieved a letter with a cheque for £1,000 from the Trustees of the MacLay Murray & Spens Charitable Trust. This was very unexpected, and a very pleasant surprise.
